Prague, Czech Republic 21/12/1994 3 kgs of enriched (bomb grade) uranium were found in 2 cylindrical containers in the boot of a car, along with Russian certificates. 2 Soviets and 1 Czech nuclear physicist were arrested for possession of uranium worth around $12 million US. Enrichment was to 87%, and it was about 1/8 the amount needed to make a primary. The uranium most probably came from Russian strategic military warheads, which puts in doubt the security at Russian military installations. It is believed uranium has been sold to the Russian Mafia by Atomic Energy Management personnel due to lack of government funding. Previously, a few hundred grams of plutonium were found at Munich airport in Germany. Other small quantities were intercepted at border crossings. All these interceptions have taken place in Europe, and may only be the tip of the iceberg. There is no information as to whether material has been taken out of Russia through Asian or mid-East land routes and seaways. The CIA believes Soviet weapons material has already been sold to N. Korea. Reuter
